Day 01

Arrive in Mumbai

The city that never sleeps

Parallels and Meridians welcomes you to Mumbai, the Bollywood city of India. This day is set aside for your leisure; catch up on some sleep after the exertions of travel or stroll around the places nearby to blow away the cobwebs. Our adventure begins tomorrow. Overnight at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower.

Day 02

Mumbai

Larger than life

After breakfast, we begin with a full-day sightseeing tour along with a guide. We shall visit the Gateway of India, built during the British rule to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. We will also see the Hanging Gardens of Malabar Hill. These gardens located on top of the hill have hedges beautifully shaped in the forms of many animals. Later, we will go to the renowned food joints of Mumbai such as Sardar Pav Bhaji at Tardeo, Bademiya at Colaba and Ayub’s Bandra, famous for its vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies. Mumbai boasts an excellent night life, so we can head to one of the popular night clubs afterwards. Overnight at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower.

Day 03

Mumbai – Nagpur – Pench

On to Pench national park

Today, you will be transferred to the Mumbai airport to board a flight to Nagpur. We will be transferred to Pench national park once we reach Nagpur (170kms/3hrs 20 mins). We will be staying at the Baghvan, a luxurious lodge located near a lovely stream, surrounded by the jungle. Rudyard Kipling used Pench as inspiration for the setting of his much-loved ‘The Jungle Book’. Overnight at the Baghvan.

Day 04

Pench

Wildlife at its best

Get ready for a day in the wild as we will be participating in two safaris! The early morning safari is guaranteed to generate excitement, as we will see different varieties of birds and, if lucky, the Royal Bengal Tiger. We return to the lodge for breakfast and some time for relaxation and rejuvenation. After lunch, we proceed for the afternoon safari where will have the breath-taking experience of hearing the sounds of the jungle. Overnight at the Baghvan.

Day 05

Pench – Kanha

Time for Kanha

Today, we will drive to Kanha (140kms/2hrs 20mins). Another place which helped inspire ‘The Jungle Book’, Kanha is the most famous wildlife park in Central India – tiger sightings here are very high, so if you didn’t see Shere Khan at Pench, now might be your chance! Relax at the Banjaar Tola, a resort located on the edge of the Banjaar river. Overnight at the Banjaar Tola.

Day 06

Kanha

Wonders of Kanha

We will visit the jungles of Kanha with an early morning and afternoon safari. After our return from the morning safari, we will enjoy a delicious breakfast, relax and prepare for the afternoon safari. The jungles of Kanha have a high density of leopards and sloth bears; if we are lucky, we might just be able to spot these and many other species of animals. Overnight at the Banjaar Tola.

Day 07

Kanha – Bandavgarh

Some more wildlife

We will head for another wildlife paradise called Bandavgarh (222kms/3hrs 45mins) today. While this park is smaller in size compared to other wildlife sanctuaries in Central India, it is highly likely that you will see a tiger, as it also has a high density of both tigers and leopards. Stay at the Samode Safari. Overnight at the Mahua Kothi.

Day 08

Bandavgarh

Best wildlife sightings

Today, we will go for another exciting day of safari in the morning and afternoon. Tiger sightings here are common, so let’s hope that a big cat crosses our path! We will also visit the local village called Tala, located on the lowest point of the wildlife sanctuary. See local houses made from mud and village elders smoking their ‘hookahs’ on their cots. We will come across many souvenir shops where we can buy some wildlife memorabilia. Overnight at the Mahua Kothi.

Day 09

Bandavgarh – Panna

Land of jungles

We leave for Panna after a refreshing breakfast (200 kms/4hrs 45mins drive). Panna is a fantastic wildlife sanctuary and a very popular reserve. Upon arrival at Panna you will check into Pashangarh, a luxurious Taj property. The rest of the day is free to spend at leisure. Overnight at the Pashan Garh.

Day 10

Panna

A day of safaris

Today, we will go for another exciting day of safari in the morning and afternoon. Panna has some excellent flora and fauna. Let’s hope we are able to spot some amazing wildlife. Overnight at the Pashan Garh.

Day 11

Panna – Jhansi – Agra

Train to Agra

After immersing ourselves in India’s natural wonders, we will leave for Jhansi railway station today, after breakfast at Panna. We then board our train to Agra. Once we arrive in Agra, we will get some rest. Overnight at the ITC Mughal.

Day 12

Agra

Testimony of love

No trip to Agra can be considered complete without seeing in person one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal. Seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise is a deeply moving experience, as you appreciate this monument to love, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. After breakfast we will head out for a tour of the rest of the city. This includes visiting the labyrinthine Agra Fort, still imposing itself upon the modern city with its walls of red sandstone, followed by the Itmad-Ul-Daula, popularly known as the Mini Taj, another jewel of the city. On a day of stunning sights, the intricate designs on its walls and the history behind it will surely leave you impressed. A great way to end our wonderful day will be by visiting the local markets where you can find almost anything you desire. Overnight at the ITC Mughal.

Day 13

Agra – Delhi

After breakfast today we will leave for Delhi (225kms/4hrs). Later in the day we will visit the Gurudwara of Bangla Sahib. In India, the Sikh community is very important and the places of this cult are extraordinary. Take time to discover this peaceful place and do not hesitate to meet the Sikh community who will be pleased to tell you about their culture. We will stay at The Imperial hotel. Overnight at The Imperial.

Day 14

Delhi

A glimpse of the old and new

Today we will be touring Old and New Delhi – poles apart in ambience and appearance, yet both retaining an immense sense of history. Old Delhi has a captivating cornucopia of ancient monuments, narrow streets and vibrant markets, which you can experience for yourself as you cycle by rickshaw to the imposing Red Fort – a powerful reminder of the former glories of the legendary Mughal dynasty. After this, we remove ourselves from the chaos of the old city with a foray to Raj Ghat, which was the site of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation in 1948 and has a memorial dedicated to him. We follow this by returning to Old Delhi with a visit to the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India and finally the frantic Chandni Chowk  famous for spices, inexpensive jewellery, fabrics, electronics and several popular eating joints. Despite the crowded lanes and constant, yet friendly beckoning from shopkeepers, it is a captivating place. After lunch we will start with the New Delhi tour by visiting the impressive Qutub Minar, standing 240 feet tall and giving us an insight on what life used to be like centuries ago. We then proceed to explore the fifteenth century Humayun’s Tomb, rightly famed for its intricate, sensitive design and serene atmosphere. A visit to the heart of New Delhi – built by the British at the start of the twentieth century – will take in the iconic India Gate, as well as the President’s House and the Parliament Street. Overnight at The Imperial.

No, contrary to popular belief that all Hindus are vegetarians, strict vegetarianism is limited to the southern area of Gujarat and some holy cities. However, do not dream of a beefsteak; the cow is sacred, however, some restaurants serve buffalo. The culinary differences between North and South are considerable because of the climate and historical influences. In the North, meat, bread and cereals are most common, as well as Mughlai cuisine, akin to those in the Middle East and Central Asia, where spices play a more important role than chilli. In the South, the staple meal is rice and a vegetarian dish — Dal, a kind of lentil soup or as a side dish or as a basic meal; the Thali is the ubiquitous dish, originally from South India, it is used throughout the country. You can also taste meat or fish curries and succulent tandoori (less strong than the curry).

Clothing

To respect the Indian culture, the dress code is something that the traveler should know. In religious places, people are expected to wear clothes that go beyond the knees. In Jain temples, do not carry leather goods like belts or sandals. Women are expected to cover their heads in some religious sites.

Electrical outlet

There is no reason for you not to take your electrical items due to electrical outlets, the Indian market has most adapters.

Internet

Wireless Internet is now available in most hotels however; some hotels have an additional charge for it. Wireless network is not available in regions such as Ladakh, Kargil and Alichi. In these areas, to access the Internet, you will need to spend some time in an Internet café.

Post the earthquake, life is still struggling in Nepal. We are helping some small shops and businesses to get into the mainstream; not by giving money, but improvising some ideas to run their business more effectively.
